From 26 June to 7 July 2017, EM Normandie‘s Institut Portuaire d'Enseignement et de Recherche (IPER), jointly with HAROPA - Port du Havre, to train 21 female professionals from all over the world in new port challenges. Organised under the aegis of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), ‘Women in Port Management ‘ meets the increasing demand from the part of English-speaking female executives for short and intensive training programmes to help them progress in the maritime and port sector.
‘Over 70 candidates from 43 countries have applied for one of the 21 grants available, an evidence of a true need for training among women working in the maritime & port sector. Even though we constantly attract international publics, we notice our reputation has increased with this new session: 20 nationalities are represented among the 21 female executives registered, including, for the first time ever, countries such as Pakistan, Tonga, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Ethiopia and Bangladesh', says IPER Director Céline Rolland.
Among the many topics raised in the sessions given by experts during the seminar: evolution of port authorities, economic relationships between ports and private operators, port & city relationships, environmental protection, safety & security stakes, importance of hinterlands.
Supplementary technical field visits are also organised (Ports of Le Havre and Rouen, infrastructures, container terminals, etc.) to give these professionals the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge to operational realities and to implement it within their home organisations' contexts.
This programme is the english-speaking version of ‘La gestion portuaire au féminin', a seminar launched in 2008 to support UNO Millenium Goal N°3 : ‘Promote gender equality and empower women'. Since its beginning, 200 women have been trained, and several of them have been able to land senior executive positions, as directors, division heads or department managers in their organisations.
